Abstract

The Quantitative Tools for Condition Assessment of Aging Infrastructure Workshop was held May 4-5, 2010, in Boulder, Colorado. It was organized by a team of researchers within the National Institute of Standards and Technology s (NIST) Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory (MSEL). This workshop was designed to sharpen the focus of NIST s programs by matching the measurement technology capabilities of MSEL with measurement and technology gaps in assessing bridge performance to prioritize their repair and replacement. The workshop brought together 48 bridge stakeholders including bridge owners, universities, industry, and NIST researchers. Bridge owners includes state and regional departments of transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA). The attendees helped identify critical research areas that would provide the best opportunity for application of NIST staff skills. The workshop began with keynote presentations to frame the topics. The keynotes were followed by parallel breakout sessions to develop and rank potential research activities. The workshop concluded with all the attendees reconvening to develop a consensus and prioritized list.
