Nitrogen Contamination in Elastic Neutron Scattering

February 23, 2011
Author(s)
Song Xue Chi, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Ying Chen, William D. Ratcliff, Benjamin Ueland, Nicholas P. Butch, Shanta R. Saha, Kevin Kirshenbaum, Johnpierre Paglione
Nitrogen gas accidentally sealed in a sample container produces various spurious effects in elastic neutron scattering measurements. These effects are systematically investigated and the details of the spurious scattering are presented.

Cd-doping effects in Ce 2 MIn 8 (M=Rh and Ir) Heavy Fermion Compounds

June 15, 2010
Author(s)
C. Adriano, C. Giles, E. M. Bittar, L. N. Coelho, F. de Bergevin, C. Mazzoli, L. Paolasini, William Ratcliff, Richard Bindel, Jeffrey Lynn, Z. Fisk, P. G. Pagliuso
Low temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce 2MIn 8 (M = Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that Cd-doping enhances

Absence of the Hyperfine Magnetic Field at the Ru Site in Ferromagnetic Rare-Earth Intermetallics

May 3, 2010
Author(s)
D. Coffey, M. DeMarco, P.C. Ho, M. B. Maple, T. Sayles, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Qingzhen Huang, S. Toorongian, M. Haka
The Mossbauer Effect(ME) is frequently used to investigate magnetically ordered systems. One usually assumes that the magnetic order induces a hyperfine magnetic field, B hyper fine, at the ME active site. This is the case in the ruthenates, where the

Origin of Electric Field Induced Magnetization in Multiferroic HoMnO 3

April 7, 2010
Author(s)
Benjamin Ueland, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Mark Laver, Y. J. Choi, S.-W. Cheong
We have performed polarized and unpolarized small angle neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of HoMnO 3 and have found that an increase in magnetic scattering at low momentum transfers begins upon cooling through temperatures close to the spin

Coupled magnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis in multiferroic Ni ^ d3 ^ V ^ d2 ^ O ^ d8 ^

August 18, 2009
Author(s)
I. Cabrera, M. Kenzelmann, Wangchun Chen, Ross Erwin, Thomas R. Gentile, Juscelino Leao, Jeffrey W. Lynn, N. Rogado, R. J. Cava, C. Broholm, G. Lawes, Ying Chen
Electric control of spin chirality in a magnetically frustrated multiferroic is demonstrated through polarized magnetic neutron diffraction. Cooling to the cycloidal multiferroic phase of Ni ^ d3 ^ V ^ d2 ^ O ^ d8 ^ in an electric field causes the

Neutron Scattering Studies of LiCoPO 4 & LiMnPO 4

June 9, 2009
Author(s)
W. Tian, Jiying Li, Haifeng Li, Jeffrey W. Lynn, J. L. Zarestky, David Vaknin
LiCoPO 4 (T N approximately equal) 21.8 K ) & LiMnPO 4 (T N approximately equal} 34 K) are antiferromagnetic insulators exhibiting large magnetoelectric effects. We performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments to investigate the spin dynamics

Phonon softening and anomalous mode near the x c = 0.5 quantum critical point inCa 2-x Sr x RuO 4

May 4, 2009
Author(s)
R. G. Moore, M. D. Lumsden, M. B. Stone, Jiandi Zhang, Ying Chen, Jeffrey Lynn, R. Jin, D Mandrus, E. W. Plummer
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the temperature-dependent phonon dispersion in Ca2−xSrxRuO4(x=0.4,0.6). The in-plane Σ4 octahedral tilt mode softens significantly at the zone boundary of the high-temperature tetragonal (HTT) I41/acd

Origin and Tuning of the Magnetocaloric Effect in the Magnetic Refrigerant Mn1.1Fe0.9(P0.8Ge0.2)

January 26, 2009
Author(s)
Danmin Liu, Ming Yue, Jiuxing Zhang, T. M. McQueen, Jeffrey Lynn, Xiaolu Wang, Ying Chen, Jiying Li, R. J. Cava, X. Liu, Zaven Altounian, Qingzhen Huang
Neutron-diffraction and magnetization measurements have been carried out on a series of samples of the magnetorefrigerant Mn1+yFe1−yP1−xGex. The data reveal that the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases correspond to two very distinct crystal structures

Spin Correlations in the Geometrically Frustrated Pyrochlore Tb 2 Mo 2 O 7

December 31, 2008
Author(s)
D. K. Singh, J. S. Helton, S. Chu, T. Han, C. Bonnoit, Sung Chang, Hye J. Kang, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Y. S. Lee
We report neutron scattering studies of the spin correlations of the geometrically frustrated py- rochlore Tb 2Mo 2O 7using single crystal samples. Elastic diffuse peaks are observed at low temperatures, indicating short-range ordering of the Tb 3+ moments

Neutron-Diffraction Measurements of Magnetic Order and a Structural Transition in the Parent BaFe2As2 Compound of FeAs-Based High-Temperature Superconductors

December 17, 2008
Author(s)
Qingzhen Huang, Yiming Qiu, Wei Bao, Mark Green, Jeffrey Lynn, Y. C. Gasparovic, T. Wu, G. Wu, X. H. Chen
The recent discovery of superconductivity in (Ba,K)Fe2As2, which crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2 (122) structure as compared with the LnFeAsO (Ln is lanthanide) systems that possess the ZrCuSiAs (1111) structure, demonstrates the exciting potential of the
