Abstract

This article presents a brief review of some of the many insights gained about metallic ferromagnetism using spin-polarized electrons as probes. Aspects of metallic ferromagnetism discussed include spin-dependent electronic structure, spin-dependent mean free paths, spin waves, surface and interface anisotropy, magnetic nanostructure, and coupling of magnetic layers. These aspects are probed with polarized electrons using experimental techniques are spin-polarized photoemission and inverse photoemission, secondary electron emission, spin-dependent electron scattering and energy loss spectroscopy, spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. I highlight the application of these insights and techniques to current research.
