The Calculation of Natural Gas Viscosity

Abstract

The calculation of natural gas viscosity has been implemented many different ways including the use of constants. Different methods of calculating natural gas viscosity may produce values with differences as large as 50%. Increasing natural gas prices provide an incentive for measuring natural gas more accurately. Improving flowmeter accuracy often requires the use of performance parameters calculated using viscosity. Four sources of experimental natural gas viscosity values are compared to REFPROP. The difference between REFPROP and the experimental data are shown to be less than 5% at pressures less than 10 MPa. A method of calculating natural gas viscosity for use in CEESI data acquisition software is also compared to the experimental data. The CEESI natural gas viscosity values are shown to be less than 5% different from the experimentally determined natural gas viscosity values at pressures less than 10 MPa.
