Abstract
The fundamental principles for chemical analysis by optical methods are established. However, only recent advances in instrumentation and spectroscopic techniques have substantially expended the feasibility of routine spectroscopic analysis of gaseous samples. New more robust and user-friendly instruments with high sensitivities and, more recently, imaging capabilities are becoming viable tools for field measurements. This trend is advancing gas measurements in a variety of applications ranging from healthcare and environmental monitoring to industrial quality assurance/control and homeland security. The on-going research and development in thses areas suggest that even more powerful tools are on the horizon. A comprehensive review with detailed descriptions of a variety of optically based methods has been recently published.[1] This article highlights some of the advantages of spectroscopic measurements and provides a general overview of particularly notable advances that offer to further promote applications of these optical technologies.
