# Project Brief: Fluke Electronics Corporation

NIST Measurement Science and Engineering Research Grants

PHASOR MEASUREMENT UNITS CALIBRATOR DEVELOPMENT

Develop an instrument for calibrating measurements of the magnitude and phase of voltage and current signals in a power system—a combined mathematical entity called a phasor—to facilitate deployment of the Smart Grid in the U.S. electric power system.

RECIPIENT: Fluke Electronics Corporation, Everett, WA

• Project duration: 3 Years
• Total NIST Funding: $1,404,400 • Additional Funding from Fluke:$390,000

As countries around the world work towards the implementation of a Smart Grid, a key factor to success is reliable wide area situational awareness. Consistent and repeatable monitoring of grid performance through devices, including phasor measurement units (PMUs), play a critical role in providing effective situational awareness. Fluke Electronics Corporation will develop a measurement calibration instrument for PMUs to facilitate deployment of the Smart Grid in the U.S. electric power system. This instrument will be designed to meet requirements established by the IEEE Synchrophasor Standard C37.118-2005 and North American SunchroPhasor Initiative PMU testing guidelines.
