Sample NanoFab Project Applications

CNST NanoFab Project Application Examples

It is very important that each application provide complete and sufficient information to be evaluated commensurate with the technical scope of the project and any financial support requested from the CNST in the form of reduced rates. Although each project application will, of course, be different, below we provide a selection of fictional examples intended to illustrate the nature and scope of the information we require.

Application 1: A simple, non-proprietary project requesting reduced rates

This example project is led by an academic institution with a postdoctoral researcher as the Applicant, the supervisory professor as the Principal Investigator, and includes collaborators from two additional universities.

Application 2: A medium complexity, non-proprietary project requesting reduced rates

This example project is led by a small company with a company employee as the Principal Investigator, and collaborators from two universities. The applicant will learn nanofabrication techniques for the first time, and requires the NanoFab to help determine the process flow required for the project.

Application 3: A complex, non-proprietary project requesting reduced rates

This example is a "follow-on" to a previous NanoFab project, with a NIST Guest Researcher as the applicant and a NIST federal employee as the Principal Investigator, and collaborators from multiple institutions.

Application 4: A medium complexity, proprietary project

This example project is led by a small company planning to do proprietary research (i.e., all work in the NanoFab will be performed by the company's employees). The company developed the needed processes and expertise with NanoFab training and support during a prior, non-proprietary project.
