NCAL: Octostrain Test Machine

An octostrain (8 tensile arms) test machine is available in the NIST Center for Automotive Lightweighting. By increasing the number of arms from the four used in the cruciform test machine, higher strains are obtainable. This device is a lower capacity version of the octostrain test machine available at NCNR BT-8.

In addition to the test machine capabilities listed below, the default configuration includes:

  • A stereo Digital Image Correlation (DIC) strain mapping system
  • An X-ray diffraction (XRD) system to measure lattice strains and macroscopic stresses in situ

Specifications/Capabilities

Testing Machine Capabilities:

  • Eight stepper motor actuators
  • 12 kN max. force on each actuator
  • Each actuator can be independently controlled

The instrument pages for NCAL DIC Measurement Systems and NCAL Diffraction Stress Measurement Systems include details of the DIC and XRD systems that can be used on this frame
