Cara O'Malley (Fed)

Cara O’Malley is a Senior Academic Program Manager in the International and Academic Affairs Office (IAAO). Her primary responsibilities include directing the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) and Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP). She also supports additional IAAO academic programs and outreach efforts. Cara is a leading member of the Educational Outreach Working Group (EO-WG), and played an instrumental role in developing the NIST Educational STEM Resource (NEST-R) registry. Cara joined NIST in June 2020 as a mathematician on the Mission Critical Voice (MCV) team in the Communication Technology Laboratory's (CTL) Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) division. While her work mainly supported Quality of Experience projects and focused on the acquisition and analysis of data, Cara also contributed to laboratory configuration, implementation, and metrology system deployments. Prior to on-boarding with NIST, Cara taught secondary mathematics at several school districts in Colorado. Cara holds a Master of Science in Mathematics from Emporia State University and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University.
