Research Interests: 

Mechanisms of fracture of structural materials, especially under different environmental conditions.  Understanding failure requires correlating the microstructure of metals, and the development of the microstructure under applied loads, to the fracture mode.  Surface fractographic features can be deceptive without an understanding of the underlying microstructure, especially when environmental factors such as hydrogen gas are involved.  A full array of microscopy techniques is used to further understanding of mechanical performance and failure for as varied projects in the Fatigue and Fracture group as Materials Testing in Hydrogen Gas, Pipeline Safety, Advanced Mechanical Characterization of Mesoscale Materials, and the Charpy Machine Verification Program.
