5499: Retail Motor-Fuel Dispensers and Consoles

This seminar will teach students how to properly inspect and test Retail Motor-Fuel Dispensers (RMFDs); that is, perform an official examination by properly applying all applicable NIST Handbook 44 requirements. The sessions will include formal lecture, class discussion, group exercises, audio-visual presentations, and some hands-on practice.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this course, using your references and notes, you will be able to:

  • IDENTIFY and DESCRIBE the requirements specified in NIST Handbook 44 for retail motor-fuel dispensers (RMFDs).
  • DESCRIBE the standard features and major components of RMFDs, including common types of pumping systems and RMFDs.
  • DESCRIBE the minimum tests and examination procedures to be performed when testing an RMFD as specified in the relevant NIST Examination Procedure Outlines (EPOs).
  • IDENTIFY safety considerations associated with examining RMFDS and EXPLAIN the importance of working with local safety experts regarding local requirements and equipment.
  • DESCRIBE the procedures for selecting the most appropriate test standard (and other equipment) for testing an RMFD system and the proper procedures for reading and draining the standard.
  • CALCULATE and APPLY the applicable tolerance to the test of an RMFD.
