A robust structure is a structure that can withstand local failure, suc h as failure of a column, without widespread collapse. To support the development of improved guidelines and standards for the design of robust structures, NIST has conducted full-scale testing and computational modeling of structural systems commonly used in US buildings. This video shows testing of a steel moment-frame assembly under a column removal scenario, in which vertical loading is applied to the unsupported center column of the two-span assembly until a connection to the center column fractures.
