Canada-US Artificial Intelligence Workshop

On June 28, the Canada-US Artificial Intelligence (AI) virtual workshop took place, which focused on joint efforts to establish frameworks for the responsible development and use of AI technologies. Topics for discussion included:

• The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) new AI Risk Management Framework.
• The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) AI and Data Governance Standardization Collaborative.
• Geopolitical implications of AI standardization activities, including issues of trustworthiness in AI technologies, interoperability, and market access.

Experts in the field included:

• Phil Dawson – Head, Global AI Policy & Advisory, Armilla AI and AI Policy Lead, Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society
• Elham Tabassi – Associate Director for Emerging Technologies, Information technology Laboratory, NIST
• Tom Lebrun – Program Manager, Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance Program, SCC
