Standards committees are actively working to develop standard test methods for the performance evaluation of 5-axis machining centers through the direct and indirect measurement of simultaneous motions of all five axes [1-2]. However, the compound effect of the individual geometric errors and servo control errors makes the analysis of the measurement results complicated and the identification and separation of the individual error contributor(s) difficult. To better understand the effect of the individual errors on the measurement results, NIST is developing a multi-configuration five-axis Virtual Machine Tool (VMT) model.
