Abstract

To efficiently assemble manufacturing supply chains, manufacturers need to provide precise and easily accessible their manufacturing service capability (MSC) information described in the form of MSC descriptions. However, a number of challenges exist in today's industry practices such as inefficient suppliers searching, significant error rate in communications of manufacturing capabilities and requirements between customer and supplier. To address these challenges, this paper proposes enhanced communication of MSC information via development of a standard MSC model. MSC model is an advanced information model that allows computer-interpretable representation of MSC descriptions. MSC descriptions created with such model will allow for communication of manufacturing requirements and capabilities, software functions, product functions, and design features. As the first stage in developing such standard this paper analyzes an as-is and provide a to-be MSC information communication scenarios and characterizes types of MSC descriptions to set a stage for requirements of a standard MSC model.
