Protection of Firefighters under the Building Codes

Abstract

Historically in the United States and in most other countries the building codes have been silent on the subject of the protection of firefighters. As these largely prescriptive codes have been replaced by performance-based codes that are based on explicit statements of objectives this issue has surfaced. In several countries this has been the topic of lively debate. This paper is intended to raise the major issues and to focus the debate in the hope of achieving some level of international consensus.
