This paper presents reasons why standards are important for medical applications of nano-electrotechnologies and summarizes ongoing consensus-based international technology roadmapping and standards activities. It gives key results from a recent international survey on priorities for nano-electrotechnologies. Pair-wise correlations of the survey data for the cross-cutting technology area of environmental health and safety (EHS) highlight a bimodal distribution between medical and energy products enabled by nano-electrotechnolgoies. These correlations show that those who assigned medical products the highest priority also assigned EHS the highest priority. Whereas, those who assigned energy products the highest priority assigned EHS a low priority. An example from bioelectronics is then used to illustrate the opportunities and challenges of international standards and associated measurements to advance medical applications of nano-electrotechnologies.
