Abstract

The Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a voluntary resource for organizations to manage the risks posed by AI technologies to individuals, communities, society, and the environment. Acting on a 2021 Congressional mandate, NIST – an agency in the U.S. Department of Commerce – developed the AI RMF in an open, transparent, consensus-based process in collaboration with private industry, civil society, academia, and government entities in the US and around the world. Intended to drive organizational culture change, rather than providing a checklist, the AI RMF can be implemented across a broad ecosystem of institutions seeking to manage the risks of AI technology. This paper describes the AI RMF and its attributes, how it was developed, and methods for implementation.
