This paper considers the requirements of a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) discipline, and the benefits that would be realized from it. A premise of MBSE is that the technical environment supporting systems engineering has evolved, and is still evolving. We analyze the basis of systems engineering decision making in conjunction with the technical environment in which it may soon be performed. The analysis provides insight into the requirements that, when met, enable a model-based systems engineering discipline. We report on our practical experience toward meeting the requirements using UML, SysML, AADL, AP233, and a systems engineering tool interoperability testbed.
