Abstract
Lead isotope analysis is often applied in various fields such as archaeology, geochemistry and forensic science. Despite this, only the 3 primary isotopic reference materials NIST SRM; 981, NIST SRM 982 and NIST SRM 983 are available, whereby NIST SRM 981 mainly is used for correcting instrumental mass discrimination / fractionation. Until now no certified isotope reference material was available, which could be used for validating or verifying an analytical procedure for Pb isotope analysis. To fill this gap two reference materials certified for their Pb isotopic composition have been produced, which are accompanied by a complete uncertainty calculation and which offer SI traceability. ERM-EB400 is a bronze material characterized for its Pb isotopic composition. Additionally, a solution of pure Pb has been produced offering a Pb atomic weight at the lower end of the natural isotopic variation (ERM-AE142). Both materials are specifically produced to assist analysts in validating their analytical procedures. Details on the characterization of these isotope reference materials are provided in the report.
