Stephen Wise (Assoc)

Steve Wise is Senior Analytical Chemist and Program Coordinator for Food and Nutrition in the Chemical Sciences Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He received a B.A. in Chemistry from Weber State University (Ogden, Utah) and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Arizona State University (Tempe, Arizona). Steve began his career at NIST, then the National Bureau of Standards) in 1976 as a research chemist involved in chromatographic methods development for trace organic analysis. During his career at NIST, his research activities have focused on trace organic analysis including: (1) development of chromatographic methods for the determination of organic contaminants, e.g., polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and chlorinated pesticides, in environmental matrices such as sediment, marine tissues, and air and diesel particulate matter; (2) development of Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) for trace organic constituents in environmental, clinical, food, and dietary supplement matrices; (3) investigations of chromatographic separation mechanisms and chromatographic selectivity for PAHs and related compounds; and (4) development and implementation of environmental specimen banking procedures. He has authored or co-authored over 320 technical publications and presented over 250 talks describing these activities at national and international scientific meetings and universities.
