Dr. Heather Hill is a physicist in the Sensor Science Division of the Physical Measurement Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. She works on improving the methods to calibrate and characterize optical detectors in the ultraviolet through near infrared.
Dr. Hill received her Ph.D. in Physics at Columbia University, where she investigated the novel optical properties of layered, two-dimensional materials. Her research on electrical and optical characterization of 2D materials continued as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at NIST working with Dr. Angela Hight Walker. Dr. Hill next became an editor and journalist at the magazine Physics Today. She then moved to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in the Department of Treasury, where she led projects to develop novel security features for banknotes, before returning to NIST.
