Gema Howell is a Computer Scientist within the Applied Cybersecurity Division at NIST. She is a contributor to several publications and is one of the co-leads of NIST’s Cybersecurity for Research project. Gema researched methods to secure mobile devices and IoT devices tailored to first responders. Previous research efforts include investigating methods to securely manage mobile devices for the emergency medical and fire services, and law enforcement. Gema also worked to create reference architectures for secure enterprise mobile deployments (e.g., BYOD) at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). As Cybersecurity lead on the NIST Voting Team, she’s assisted in the development of the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG) 2.0 Principles and Guidelines, and drafted accompanying VVSG 2.0 requirements related to cybersecurity.
