Chase McCallum (Fed)

Mechanical Engineer

Chase McCallum is a mechanical engineer in the Materials and Structural Systems Division at NIST’s Engineering Laboratory. McCallum works on the Evidence Preservation project within the Champlain Towers South (CTS) Partial Collapse National Construction Safety Team (NCST) Investigation. As part of the CTS investigation, he supports evidence preservation through field deployments, forensic sampling (concrete cores and rebar), mechanical and corrosion testing, audiovisual analysis, and evidence data management of evidentiary inventories and measurements.

Additionally, he leads durability testing—including mechanical, thermal, and weathering evaluations—on Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite retrofits as part of the Reliability of FRP Composites in the Resilient Infrastructure Project. These retrofits represent those used for the strengthening, repair, and seismic retrofit of civil infrastructure in the US. Other contributions include aiding in the development of standards for 3D-printed concrete infrastructure and assisting in the investigation of the structural-scale pyrrhotite-driven deterioration of concrete foundations in New England.

McCallum has a B.S. and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at Dallas where he researched the use of phase change materials (PCM) within building envelopes to reduce their energy consumption.
