Antonio Marcos Saraiva (IntlAssoc)

Antonio Marcos Saraiva is a guest researcher in the NIST-SIM Engagement program at the National Institute of Metrology, Technology and Quality (Inmetro - Brazil). He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the same university, working on the enzymatic and structural characterization of proteins from the phytopathogen Xylella fastidiosa (the first bacterium with a sequenced genome in Brazil in 2000).

At Inmetro, he works on the standardization and harmonization of procedures for quantifying nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from different samples using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and digital PCR (dPCR). He also participates in international committees such as ISO/TC 276 Biotechnology and the Nucleic Acids Working Group (NAWG) under the auspices of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology (CCQM).

At NIST, he works on RNA and DNA degradation processes involving infrared spectroscopy techniques under the supervision of Dr. Young Lee. These efforts involve a better understanding of these processes as a quality control for products in the biotechnology industry.
