This suborder is designed to raise awareness about the risks of hazardous noise and reduce the potential of hearing loss through the early recognition, evaluation, and control of noise-related hazards. NIST works to keep noise levels as low as practicable through equipment selection and engineering and administrative controls. When these measures cannot reduce noise levels to acceptable levels, staff need to use personal protective equipment.
