Abstract
The problem of software systems integration getting independently developed software components to communicate in order to support a business application has been altered by the introduction of new software technologies, but by no means eliminated. NIST has undertaken a project to determine whether we now the technology to automate significant elements of the software integration task. This report documents the results of the initial study. It defines integration tasks and their primary inputs and outputs, and it categorizes the technical barriers that the systems engineer must overcome in developing an integrated system. Finally, it identifies a number of software technologies and approaches derived from several engineering disciplines that may be brought to bear in automating certain integration tasks and overcoming certain technical barriers.
