Abstract
Quantifying the luminance range in a medical x-ray and the electronic displays for use in radiology is difficult because of the extremely high contrasts involved. Methods are presented here that permit the evaluation of the performance of a detector probe used in attempt to accurately measure these high contrast images. The contamination of the measured displayed luminance arising from the reflections back off the detector apparatus are measured and compared with the internal veiling-glare corruption that occurs from scattering within the detector probe. The veiling-glare from scattering is seen to be the major contribution to errors in luminance measurements using a simple detector within the probe. Suggestions for improvements are presented for future work.
