Abstract

The National Conference of Standards Laboratories International was formed in forty years ago (as NCSL) to promote cooperative efforts for solving the common problems faced by measurement laboratories. The principal driver for its establishment was the late Dr. William A. Wildhack, then Special Assistant to the Director, National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)The ties between NCSLI and NIST have remained strong over the years and it seemed appropriate to mark NCSLI's forty years and NIST's Centennial Year with special sessions at the NCSLI Symposium. The first of these looks back at The History of Our National Measurement Laboratory; the second looks forward to the future of NIST metrology, Into Our Second Century. The Chair for both sessions is Dr. Richard F. Kayser, Director of NIST Technology Services and NIST Representative to NCSLI and member of its Board of Directors. This document is a collection of the slides used by the speakers at both sessions. Two who have retired from NIST after distinguished careers there reviewed NBS The First Sixty Years (Peter L.M. Heydemann) and The Emergence of Modern Metrology 1962 to the Present (James F. Schooley). Four active managers at NIST discussed Chemical Metrology: Future Developments (Hratch G. Semerjian, Director of the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory), Electrometrology and NIST New Directions (William E. Anderson, Director of the Electronics and Electrical Engineering Laboratory), NIST Length and Dimensional Metrology in 2015 (Dennis A. Swyt, Chief of the Precision Engineering Division, Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory), and Optical and Ionizing Radiation Metrology in 2015 (Thomas R. O'Brian, Senior Program Analyst, NIST Program Office).
