Abstract
The Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) Digital Cinema Ad Hoc Group is involved in assessing various compression algorithms for digital cinema applications. An experiment was designed by the group, involving two digital cinema projectors: a digital light processor (DLP) projector, which uses the digital micromirror device (DMD), and a cathode ray tube (CRT) projector. The group was concerned about whether the system being used (server, interface, projector, screen, viewing room) would block out important details that are important in the assessment of compression algorithms. They asked NIST to oversee initial measurements made on the projectors in order to characterize their performance before the visual testing was to begin. The report describes the results of the projector characterization as reported to the MPEG Digital Cinema Ad Hoc Group in July 2001.
