Abstract

The National Biomonitoring Specimen Bank (NBSB) was established in 1979 from the pilot Environmental Specimen Bank Program and is maintained at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Numerous research projects and programs have been developed in collaboration with national and international agencies over the last 27 years of specimen banking at NIST. One such program is the National Marine Quality Assurance Program that was established in 1995 between NIST and the National Marine Fisheries Service. As part of this agreement, NIST established a satellite facility of the NBSB at the Hollings Marine Laboratory, in Charleston, South Carolina. This facility, the Marine Environmental Specimen Bank (Marine ESB), is dedicated to banking primarily marine environmental specimens through many different programs. This document describes the Marine ESB facility and provides protocols for the activities that are involved in maintaining banked specimens.
