Abstract
The General Accounting Office (GAO) requested the assistance of the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in the investigation of the construction of the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida. Specifically, GAO desired answers to questions related to the following: 1) the formulation of cracks in the main of the bridge span; 2) the materials used in the concrete mixtures; and the procedures used in the placement of concrete in the drilled shaft foundations. The objective of the GAO inquiry is to determine the reasonableness and validity of the positions taken by the Florida Department of Transportation on each of the concerns expressed by a number of individuals in connection with the bridge construction. This report provides answers to those questions and provides explanations for each answer.
