The First Standard for Manufacturing Simulation Officially Approved
On September 20 at the 2010 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW), the Core Manufacturing Simulation Data (CMSD) specification was officially announced as a Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) standard by Katherine Morse, Chair of the SISO Executive Committee, and Ken Peplow, Chair of the SISO Standards Activity Committee. SISO is an international organization dedicated to the promotion of modeling and simulation (M&S) interoperability and reuse. The CMSD standard defines an information model that describes the essential entities in the manufacturing domain and the relationships between those entities needed to create manufacturing-oriented simulations.
The CMSD standard helps to resolve long-standing interoperability issues that make integrating manufacturing applications and simulation difficult and expensive. Standards like CMSD help to reduce the systems integration costs incurred by manufacturers due to the lack of systems interoperability. The automotive and aerospace industries have estimated spending five billion dollars a year from lack of interoperability.
The Manufacturing Systems Integration Division developed, tested, and led the effort to standardize the CMSD specification. The CMSD Product Development Group (PDG) of the SISO was established in 2003 as a venue for standardization. Swee Leong, Frank Riddick, and Tina Lee have held the elected positions of Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary respectively. Riddick and Lee have also served as the official editors for the SISO standards-related documents.
Already, the Beta version of the CMSD application has been adopted in the development of a potentially lucrative commercial product, tentatively named "eVSM to QUEST," by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc.
