NIST OWM Info Hour: OWM EVSE Metrology Training Program

NIST Office of Weights and Measures Info Hours

Learn about the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)-supported effort at the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) to develop a comprehensive 5-day electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) metrology training program that will include webinars, targeted learning modules, and both classroom and laboratory lectures and hands-on training. An overview of the NETL/OWM collaboration and its role in meeting the 97% uptime charging goal for U.S. EVSE infrastructure will be provided. The training program will enable state weights and measures officials and other stakeholders to ensure equity in the EV charging market through compliance with commercial standards developed by state regulators and members of the U.S. EVSE industry. The NIST training program will primarily be designed to train weights and measures officials who will be both conducting inspections and instructing state regulators on the metrological testing of commercial EV charging stations. Additionally, the course is intended for state metrology laboratories, state weights and measures regulatory officials, and other key industry and equipment manufacturer stakeholders and covers the following key areas that underpin sound measurements in commerce:

  1. Fundamentals of Metrology
  2. Electricity Fundamentals
  3. Electrical Metrology and NIST Standards
  4. EV Fueling Specifications and Tolerances in NIST Handbook 44
  5. Regulations for the Method of Sale of EV Fuel in NIST Handbook 130

OWM Info Hours: OWM EVSE Metrology Training Program
OWM Info Hours: OWM EVSE Metrology Training Program
The NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) hosts a series of Information Hours, or "Info Hours," that feature insights on topics relevant to legal metrology and documentary standards through an informal technical discussion and Question and Answer forum. In this week's session, NIST OWM’s Mike Stocker presents an overview of the role of weights and measures in the evolving U.S. EV charging industry and introduces OWM’s comprehensive 5-day electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) metrology training program. The course, currently in development, include webinars, targeted learning modules, classroom lectures, laboratory instruction, and hands-on training. The NIST program, with support from the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), will enable state weights and measures officials and other stakeholders to ensure equity in the EV charging market through compliance with commercial standards developed by state regulators and members of the U.S. EVSE industry. Though primarily designed for weights and measures officials who conduct inspections and instruct state regulators on the metrological testing of commercial EV charging stations, the course is also intended for state metrology laboratories, state weights and measures regulatory officials, and other key industry and equipment manufacturer stakeholders. Moderators: David Sefcik/NIST and Loren Minnich/NIST. Video Editor: Jennifer Lee/NIST. Recorded June 18, 2026.
