Writing Right: International System of Units (SI) in STEM Communication

Writing is a regular part of most professions. But in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, it’s especially important that measurement results are communicated clearly and unambiguously. Avoiding measurement unit writing errors is critical. Even slight measurement unit oversights undermine confidence in the resulting products and services, or worse…result in costly mistakes or deadly mishaps.

During this 1-hour session, participants will explore the essential elements of the International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system and learn how to apply accepted SI writing conventions when communicating measurement results. This event is ideal for participants who would like to become more familiar with measurement system application in field, laboratory, and manufacturing activities. Accurately expressing measurement quantities in written communications is critical. International System of Units (SI) writing style best practices, unit symbols, and error recognition will be addressed.

Learning Objectives

  • At the end of this session, you will be able to:
    • IDENTIFY key elements of the International System of Units (SI).
    • LIST official sources of measurement system information.
    • DISCOVER common unit symbol writing errors.
