Technical Contributions to AI Governance

The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) AI Program provides scientific and technical expertise and contributions to national and international discussions on AI governance. The Program plays a key role as a neutral convener of organizations and individuals with disparate views about AI matters. The agency’s active participation in national and international discussions helps to shape the development of effective and reliable AI and ground AI governance in technical realities.

The ITL AI Program has been engaged with U.S. and international AI governance efforts such as the OECD and the G7 Hiroshima Process, as well as a host of bilateral initiatives in places such as Asia, the Middle East, and North America. On many of these efforts, the Program partners with other agencies, including the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration and the U.S. Department of State.

Contributing to Exploration and Development of AI Governance 

The ITL AI Program leads and participates in several federal AI efforts and engages with many other federal offices and interagency groups. This includes:

• Serving as the federal AI standards coordinator,
• Administering the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC),
• Co-chairing the National Science and Technology Council’s Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee,
• Co-chairing the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development’s (NITRD) AI Working group,
• Founding and co-chairing the AI Standards Coordination Working Group (AISCWG) under the Interagency Committee on Standards Policy (ICSP), and
• Serving as a member of the National AI Research Resource Task Force.
