2020 Bronze Medal Award

AWARD CITATION

Drs. Chen, Erwin, and Watson are recognized for the development of new technology for polarizing neutrons and its application to neutron science.  They have built and led a world-leading program of helium-3-based neutron spin filters at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, enabling over 80 ground-breaking publications. By addressing critical design challenges associated with implementing these filters on the Very Small Angle Neutron Scattering (vSANS) and Multi-Axis Crystal Spectrometer (MACS) instruments, they have opened up new and unprecedented capabilities for neutron science.
