2020 Bronze Medal Award

AWARD CITATION

Drs. Campbell and Stoudt are honored for the development of three new highly-designed materials needed by the U.S. Mint to lower the cost of US coins like the Nickle.  To rapidly address the Mint’s needs and to match current coin performance, they developed an accelerated materials design approach, with new predictive models that artfully incorporated needed coin specifications and that directed alloy optimization.  This innovative approach saved the U.S. years of research costs.  The valuable new materials were swiftly patented to protect them for use by the Mint now and in the future.
