The group is recognized for creating the most accurate and comprehensive capabilities for the absolute calibration of optical radiation detectors from the visible to the far infrared and making these capabilities available through NIST measurement services. Such calibrated detectors are the primary route for establishing traceability of optical radiation measurements to the International System of Units (SI). Calibrated detectors are the primary measurement route of government and private-sector programs that include satellite-based sensing of Earth's weather and climate, lighting, water treatment, solar energy, and astronomical observations. The effort also led to significant improvements in NASA and Department of Defense detector-calibration capabilities.
