Join us on Tuesday September 26th, at our NEW RECURRING MEETING TIME for the NICE Community Coordinating Council (fourth Tuesday of every month from 3:30 to 5:00pm ET). We will not meet in August.

In case you missed last month's meeting, the minutes from the July 26, 2023, NICE Community Coordinating Council meeting have been published. The meeting included speakers from Moreno Valley Unified School District, Gartner, Towson University, Virginia Tech, and more!

Standing Items

Report Roundup
Alex Michaels from Gartner shared a presentation on Building a Culture of Security Consciousness, a report that introduces a framework that includes practices, influences, and platforms which all surround a security behavior and culture program.

Strategy Stories
Terry Downing-Harris from Towson University presented on Integrating Secure Supply Chain Risk Management into Software Engineering Curriculum. The proposed approach will aim to design learning modules that fit easily into any software engineering course. 

Framework Feature
Donna Woods from the Moreno Valley Unified School District shared how the district is using the NICE Framework to create cybersecurity academic pathways. Students are taught how to use the framework to aid in career development.

Research Review
Ramoni Lasisi from the Virginia Military Institute provided a briefing on a proposed Cybersecurity Workforce Readiness Recommender System (CyberReco). The system attempts to identify "readiness gaps" - the cybersecurity knowledge and skills one needs to gain to be workforce-ready.


Working Group and Community of Interest Updates

Project Updates

The NEW Diversity and Inclusion Community of Interest is being led by co-chairs Zach Oxendine (Microsoft) and Dr. Deanne Cranford-Wesley (North Carolina Central University).

Over the next month, the Transform Learning Process Working Group and K12 Cybersecurity Education Community of Interest will be finalizing their new project charter for recognizing faculty who teach cybersecurity.

Members from the Modernize Talent Management Working Group are working with SANS to offer a webinar to highlight the Guide for Writing Effective Job Descriptions.

The Apprenticeships in Cybersecurity Community of Interest is working on updating the apprenticeship one pager and will soon have a draft for the group to review. 

Past Meeting Presentations

  • Several Working Groups and Communities of Interest welcomed interns during their June and July meetings. Interns shared their perspectives on the value of internships, K12 cybersecurity education, and cybersecurity competitions.

Project Progress Reports

The NICE K12 Cybersecurity Education Conference is actively looking for students to participate in the 2023 National Cyber Signing Day which takes place during the conference.

The call for proposals for the 2024 NICE Conference & Expo is expected to open in October 2023.


Featured Topic

Arianna Schuler Scott from Virginia Tech provided an overview of the Modernize Talent Management's project team deliverable - ‘An Employers Guide to Writing Effective Cybersecurity Job Descriptions’. The deliverable supports Goal 3.3 of the NICE Strategic Plan: Align hiring requirements to proficiency, better reflecting candidate competencies and capabilities.

The NICE Community Coordinating Council meets monthly to engage with public and private sector participants on cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development topics. 

Additionally, the NICE Community Coordinating Council is comprised of three Working Groups and five Communities of Interest, each with their own meeting cadence.
