Thermogravimetric Analyzer

TGA

Plot comparing degradation temperatures for different types of clay materials.

Thermogravimetric Analysis, or TGA,  is a classic thermoanalytical measurement performed on many different types of materials.  In our laboratory, it is used for the analysis of polymer fiber and composite materials.  TGA is the simplest type of thermal analysis, consisting of only a highly sensitive balance and a furnace.  In this measurement, the mass of a sample is continuously measured while the sample is heated over time.  This measurement is typically used to determine the volatile content of materials and their degradation temperatures.
