EL Staff Participate at ASME DETC 2011 & Computers and Information in Engineering Conferences

There was strong representation and leading participation by NIST's Engineering Laboratory's (EL) Manufacturing Systems Integration Division staff at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Design Engineering Technical & Computers and Information in Engineering Conferences 2011, held in Washington DC August 28-31.  Staff from EL's Sustainable Manufacturing Program conducted a workshop entitled "Sustainable Manufacturing: Information Modeling for Sustainable Manufacturing Standards, Methodologies and Practices."  The workshop had two parts, Part I-Information Modeling: Standards, Methodologies and Practices (EL participants: Sudarsan Rachuri, Paul Witherell, Anantha Narayanan, and Jae Hyun Lee) and Part II - Modeling, Simulation and Analysis for Sustainable Manufacturing (EL participants: Gordon Shao and Jonatan Berglund). Part one focused on the information modeling, standards, and use of the Zachman Framework for sustainable manufacturing standards. Part two focused on simulation case studies.
Anantha Narayanan co-chaired a session on systems engineering during the conference. The session included various papers on model-based systems engineering, modeling with SysML, and representation of product design. Anantha Narayanan also presented a paper entitled "An Information Modeling Methodology for Standards" at the session on Modeling Tools and Metrics for Sustainable Manufacturing. The presentation highlighted the important issues in developing information models for sustainable manufacturing-related standards, and how the Zachman Framework can be applied to address these issues.

Guodong Shao presented a paper co-authored with Jorge Arinez, General Motors, entitled "A Decision-Guided Energy Management Framework for Sustainable Manufacturing" at the first Energy Efficient Manufacturing symposium of the ASME 2011 conference.  During the Conference, Shao and Jonatan Berglund of EL also hosted a meeting with Arinez, and Fred Proctor and John Michaloski from the Engineering Laboratory's Intelligent Systems Division. The discussion focused on GM's Saginaw Metal Casting Operations (SMCO) sustainability simulation project and topics included remaining work, future direction, and potential collaborative publications.

Mahesh Mani co-organized three technical sessions with Kevin Lyons and Gaurav Ameta on Modeling Tools and Metrics for Sustainable Manufacturing. Kevin Lyons organized two panels and two technical sessions on Energy Efficient Manufacturing.  Dr. Wenwu Zhang, General Electric R&D, assisted with the organization of the two technical sessions with Kevin Lyons.  Shaw Feng gave a presentation on the NIST Sustainable Manufacturing Indicator Repository.  Sylvere Krima presented DEXML, a prototype implementation framework for representing implementation guidance for ISO 0010303-239 Product Lifecycle Support (PLCS) standard.
