Cyber-Physical Systems Public Working Group Workshop

This workshop is the first face-to-face meeting of the new NIST Cyber-Physical Systems Public Working Group (CPS PWG). CPS are smart systems, in which essential properties and functionalities emerge from the networked interaction of cyber technologies—both hardware and software— co-engineered with physical systems. For example, CPS can 1) sense the current state of the system and the surrounding real world environment, and 2) respond to provide optimal performance. CPS will have a revolutionary and pervasive impact in multiple domains.

Consider these fast-paced trends:

  • Widespread deployment of cyber-physical systems in sector-specific applications, including (but not limited to) smart grid, disaster resilience, manufacturing, health care, transportation, and smart buildings.
  • Explosive growth of the Internet of Things without a broad foundation for interoperability.
  • Increasing need for systems-of-systems solutions that integrate CPS across domains and at multiple scales. 
Addressing the problems and opportunities of CPS requires broad collaboration to develop a consensus definition and taxonomy, reference architecture, and a shared understanding of the essential roles of timing and cybersecurity. To this end, NIST established the CPS PWG, which is open to all, to foster and capture inputs from those involved in CPS, both nationally and globally.

The NIST CPS PWG has been organized into four initial sub-groups that will hold regular virtual meetings over the coming months, as well as participate in face-to-face events, beginning with this workshop. The workshop agenda includes introductory presentations as well as professionally-facilitated breakout sessions, one for each subgroup, including:



  • Definitions, Taxonomy, & Reference Architecture
  • Use Cases
  • Cybersecurity & Privacy 
  • Timing & Synchronization
The objectives of the workshop are to develop plans for the CPS PWG, including scope, milestones, and schedules. Workshop participants will help characterize the PWG's tasks and set the pace for their achievement. All are welcome to participate in the workshop and the PWG, and participation is free. *New Visitor Access Requirement: Effective July 21, 2014, Under the REAL ID Act of 2005, agencies, including NIST, can only accept a state-issued driver's license or identification card for access to federal facilities if issued by states that are REAL ID compliant or have an extension. Driver's licenses from nine states and territories are not compliant and will not be accepted as identification: Alaska, Arizona, Montana, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, and American Samoa.
