Abstract

Building emulators couple computer simulations to real control hardware, creating a useful tool for studying building control system performance. The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Virtual Cybernetic Building Testbed (VCBT) is a whole building emulator designed to support research in a variety of topics linked to the concept of a "cybernetic building", where numerious building control systems are integrated together and with outside entities such as utility providers. The design and use of the VCBT is described in the context of specific research projects involving building system commissioning, automated fault detection and diagnostics, and other applications.
