Understanding IEEE 1451 - Networked Smart Transducer Interface Standard

Abstract

In response to industry's need for standardized sensor interfaces, a suite of smart transducer interface standards for transducers (sensors and actuators), known as the IEEE 1451, has been developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The IEEE 1451 specifies communication protocols and standardized data formats for smart transducers communicating with networks. IEEE 1451 smart transducers have capabilities for self-identification, self-description, self-diagnosis, self-calibration, location-awareness, and alert notification. This family of standards facilitates the plug-and-play of smart transducers into networks in various configurations. It helps users and developers to simplify the integration of the sensors and actuators into applications in a networked environment. This article discusses the concept of smart transducers and IEEE 1451 smart transducers, and the architecture, applications, and example implementations of IEEE 1451 family of standards.
