Abstract

The well-known diffraction rings resulting from spatially-varyingself-phase modulation in a nonlinear medium can be dramaticallyaltered in a partially-overlapping two-beam configuration. The cross-phase modulation caused by partially-overlapping beamsin liquid crystals and in Rb vapor near resonance is shown to resultin a change from circular rings to symmetric half-circle orD-shaped rings. The cross-phase modulation required to producethis sharp geometric change is shown to be insensitive to the exactphase pattern imprinted by the second beam.
