Abstract
This paper presents a timely opportunity to ontologize a digital twin frame-work for manufacturing using recently published international standards and proposes a collaborative research effort to accomplish this task. The ISO/IEC 21838 series of standards were released recently to address top-level ontolo-gies, which have been used by industrial consortia to release mid-level on-tologies, such as the Industrial Ontologies Foundry (IOF) Core. Around the same time, ISO 23247 series of standards were released to standardize a digi-tal twin framework for manufacturing. Now is an opportune time to apply the top-level and mid-level ontologies to create a domain-level ontology for a digital twin framework for manufacturing. This can then be used to create application-level ontologies, such as the one for biomanufacturing. This pa-per calls for a collaborative effort, similar to those employed in the creation of the ontology and digital twin standards, to reach the goals of the proposed research.
