Abstract

Composites are needed when designing components with a high strength (along a particular direction) to weight ratio. Composites are widely used in the automotive, sports and aerospace industries. Designing a composite component requires highly concurrent processes including manufacturing and assembly considerations. We discuss existing classification schemes for composites based on reinforcement type and matrix type and then map them into a new classification of 3D composites and layered composites. Next we review various research, industry and standards organization efforts toward developing computer representation models of composite components. We then present a survey of specification and verification standards for composites, highlighting their gaps and overlaps. Key findings of our analysis are that standard representation models are lacking for 3D composites and that existing computer-aided design modeling methods for layered composites need improvement.
