Surface and Interface Properties of PVDF/Acrylic Copolymer Blends

Abstract

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is commonly blended with amorphous polymers to improve its optical property. The surface and interface properties of PVDF blended with different amounts of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(ethyl acrylate) copolymer (PMMA-co-PEA) have been investigated. PVDF/PMMA-co-PEA blends at 47 % mass fraction in a ketonic solvent are cast on glass plates by draw down to have a dry film thickness of approximately 75 υm. After heating at 220 degrees C for 10 minutes in an air-circulated oven, coated glass plates are removed from the oven and slowly cooled down to ambient temperature (24 degrees C). After immersing in boiling water for 10 minutes, the films are peeled from the glass plates. Both the film surface in contact with the air (air surface) and that in contact with the glass substrate (the interface) are analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and contact angles. Results show an enrichment of the PVDF material at the air surface and of the acrylic copolymer at the interface. The differences in chemical and morphological properties between the surface and the polymer/substrate interface have strong implications on the wettability, adhesion, and durability of PVDF-based coatings.
