Modeling a Supply Chain Reference Ontology Based on a Top-Level Ontology

Abstract

Several ontologies have been introduced in the domain of supply chain over the past decade with the promise of enabling a true supply chain interoperability. However, the existing supply chain ontologies have several gaps with respect to completeness, logical consistency, accuracy in capturing the domain, and the development approach. In this work, a reference ontology is proposed for the supply chain domain that is based on a top-level ontology and is developed using an ontology development best practice. Empirical studies have proven the usefulness of adopting top-level ontologies for improving the efficiency of ontology development process and also enhancing the quality of the resulting ontologies. The proposed proof-of-concept ontology is developed in the context of the Industrial Ontology Foundry (IOF). IOF is an international effort that is aimed at providing a coherent set of modular ontologies for the manufacturing sector. Although the ontology is still at the draft stage, this paper shows that it has already benefited from the collaborative ontology development process and the inputs from the other working groups within IOF. To validate the proposed reference ontology, a variant application ontology related to a supplier discovery and evaluation use case is created and tested.
